Iran reopened its stock market on Tuesday after the longest suspension in its history, which was caused by the war with the United States and Israel, local media reported.

– After almost 80 days … the Tehran Stock Exchange reopened this morning – reported the economic newspaper Donya-e-Eqtesad.

Trading has been suspended since the start of the war on February 28, when Israeli and US attacks on Iran prompted Tehran’s retaliatory missile and drone strikes across the region.

The stock market remained closed even after the fragile truce came into effect on April 8.

Unlike the world’s major stock markets, Iran’s capital market largely operates outside the international financial system due to decades of sanctions and restrictions on foreign investment.

State news agency IRNA said trading in the shares of more than 40 companies affected by the war – including firms from the chemical and metal sectors – “will remain suspended for the time being”.

The nearly 40-day conflict has hit parts of Iran’s key infrastructure, including the country’s two largest steel plants, which shut down after the US-Israeli strikes.
