Britain could break the record for the hottest May day on record on Monday, the National Weather Service said, as the country is hit by an “unprecedented” heatwave.
– Today will be the hottest May day in the United Kingdom since temperature data is available, and maximum temperatures of up to 35 degrees Celsius are expected – the Met Office announced on social networks.
The previous record for the hottest day in May was 32.8 degrees, and it was recorded in 1922 and again in 1944.
– Records are usually broken by only a few tenths of a degree, which is why this heat wave is unprecedented for this time of year – the Met Office added.
Monday could also become the hottest public holiday in the country’s history, after heatwave conditions gripped south-east England and London overnight.
Meteorologist Tom Morgan said temperatures above 35 degrees are rarely recorded even in summer.
“Seeing almost 35 degrees in May is truly a historic event,” said Morgan.
Londoners are also expressing concern about extreme temperatures.
– The weather is nice, but much hotter than it should be in Great Britain – said Andrea Quaine, a 41-year-old mother, as temperatures exceeded 30 degrees on Sunday.
She added that she is concerned because it shows that climate change is a reality.
Ten-year-old Liza Nizari, who arrived in London from Manchester, described the heat as “a mini version of hell”.
Scientists warn that human-caused climate change is intensifying extreme weather events such as heat waves, droughts and floods, which is why temperature records are being broken more often.
In 2025, Great Britain already recorded the warmest year since measurements have been kept.
Climate advisers last week warned the British government that the country was “built for a climate that no longer exists” and called for infrastructure such as schools and hospitals to adapt to warmer weather.
