The United States of America has officially confirmed the sending of part of its ground forces to the Middle East, after days of speculation about the possible deployment of troops.
The Pentagon told the BBC that elements of the command of the 82nd Airborne Division, along with supporting units, as well as the 1st Combat Brigade, will be sent to the region. Due to security reasons, details of the exact locations and timing of the deployment have not been released.
The composition of these forces indicates the type of military capabilities that the US is bringing to the area, which is linked to the possibility of the conflict spreading.
The 82nd Airborne Division, which is based in North Carolina, is considered one of the most elite conventional units of the US Army. Its troops are on high alert and can be deployed almost anywhere in the world at very short notice, often within 18 hours.
This unit specializes in rapid action, including parachute or helicopter landings, with the aim of quickly occupying strategic positions. In the event of a possible conflict with Iran, it could be used to control key points, such as Kharg Island or other important locations.
However, we are talking about forces that are primarily intended for quick interventions and not for long-term operations because they do not have the heavy equipment needed for such tasks.
Unlike them, the 1st Combat Brigade from the 10th Mountain Division, based in New York, has the capacity to conduct longer and more complex combat operations, i.e. to operate in a full range of military tasks.
