A gunman opened fire at a mosque in the city of San Diego on Monday, and police say there are reports that people have been hit, authorities said.
Police Officer Anthony Carrasco said multiple shots were reported at the Islamic Center of San Diego, located about 9 miles north of downtown. It is not yet known whether the attacker was inside or outside the building, or whether he was arrested. The police stated that the situation is “still active, but under control”.
The Islamic Center, according to its official website, is the largest mosque in San Diego County and is home to the Al Rashid School, which offers courses in Arabic, Islamic studies and the Quran.
Aerial footage shows more than a dozen children holding hands as police evacuate them from the center’s parking lot, while the area is surrounded by numerous police vehicles.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said he was aware of the situation and was receiving regular updates.
His office called on citizens to follow the instructions of local authorities and thanked the emergency services for their quick response.
The Islamic center, according to its description, has a wider social mission in addition to religious activities, including cooperation with the local community and humanitarian activities.
