Complex challenges for Tusk when Poland takes over the EU presidency

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has a big job in 2025 as Poland takes over the rotating presidency of the EU in January, and the challenges the Polish leader will face are more than complex.

Although Warsaw has a great political chance to exploit the instability of the Franco-German axis and show EU leadership, Tusk will have to walk a tightrope in EU policy – especially in support of Ukraine – and at the same time find a modus vivendi between the EU and the future US President Donald Trump.

Tusk’s second challenge is the domestic front. Next May, Poland will hold presidential elections, “the most important since the fall of communism in 1989,” according to analysts.

Euractiv reports that these elections will determine whether he takes full control of the country, ousting his main rival, the hard-right Eurosceptic PiS party, or faces mounting political pressure ahead of the 2027 general election.
