An Israeli soldier committed suicide inside a military base in northern Israel, bringing the number of Israeli soldiers who have taken their own lives since the beginning of the Gaza war to 61, a Hebrew newspaper reported.
The newspaper Haaretz reported on Tuesday that it was a soldier – a scout who was on regular military service – who shot himself inside the base. He was seriously wounded and later died of his injuries on Tuesday evening.
Shortly before that, the Israeli army said in a statement that a soldier was seriously wounded by a firearm at a military base in the north of Israel and that he was transported to a hospital, where he later died. The army added that the military police have opened an investigation into the incident.
Details about the circumstances of the event have not been released yet, and an investigation is underway to establish all the facts regarding the death of the soldier.
An official report published by the Research and Information Center of the Israeli Knesset Parliament on October 28 of this year revealed that since the beginning of 2024, 279 suicide attempts have been recorded among Israeli soldiers.
The report, prepared at the request of Knesset representative Ofer Cassif, states that the attempts were recorded between January 2024 and July 2025. According to the Israeli public broadcaster, there are an average of seven suicide attempts for every confirmed death.
