A strong earthquake hit Hawaii: Fortunately, there is no threat of a tsunami

A magnitude 6 earthquake struck Hawaii, the US Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 22.4 kilometers, about 12 kilometers south of Honaunau-Napoopoo on Hawaii’s Big Island, the USGS said. It was recorded at 9:46 p.m. (9:46 a.m. on Saturday, Central European time), the agency added, reports HINA.

There was no tsunami threat, the National Tsunami Warning Center said. So far, there are no reports of injuries or damage.

Hawaii is a seismically active region despite its location in the middle of a massive tectonic plate. The archipelago is home to six active volcanoes, including Kilauea. Hawaii is also home to Mauna Loa, the largest volcano in the world.
