Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky assessed that the unpredictability of Donald Trump, who is scheduled to take office in the White House on January 20, can help end the war in Ukraine.
“Trump can be decisive (…) in this war. He can help us stop Putin. He is very strong and unpredictable,” Zelenski said in a television interview, assessing that the newly elected American president “really wants to end the war.”
“I really wish that President Trump’s unpredictability would apply to Russia,” he added.
The return of Donald Trump to the White House raises hopes in Kiev for decisive decisions after almost three years of war, but also fears that the American military and financial aid, which the Republican has often criticized, could be reduced.
Zelensky has long refused to negotiate an end to the war with Putin, but recently softened his stance, agreeing to temporarily give up trying to liberate all territory occupied by Moscow in exchange for NATO security guarantees and more arms aid.
On Thursday, he assessed that security guarantees for Ukraine that would not include the US would be “weak guarantees”.
Several European countries, including France, put forward the idea of a possible deployment of a military contingent in Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement, but Zelensky stressed that such an initiative must not replace Ukraine’s accession to NATO.
“We would not like only one or two countries to be in favor of this initiative. It is absolutely necessary that this initiative be in line with NATO. This does not mean that the deployment of European forces excludes the future within NATO,” said Zelenski.
