Zelensky added that Ukraine should fight in 2025 on the “battlefield” but also at the “negotiating table” in order to end the almost three-year Russian invasion.
“Every day in the coming year, we will have to fight for a Ukraine that is strong enough, because only such a Ukraine will be respected and listened to,” said Zelenskiy.
The coming year brings uncertainty to Ukraine and fears that there will be a reduction in US military and political support after Donald Trump takes power. The administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden presented military and budget aid to Ukraine of almost six billion dollars on Monday.
Trump has said he will end the conflict in “24 hours” when he takes office, sparking fears that Ukraine will be forced to leave its Russian-controlled territories in exchange for peace.

“I have no doubt that the new American president is willing and able to achieve peace and put an end to Putin’s aggression,” Zelensky said in his speech. Russian President Vladimir Putin did not specifically mention the war in Ukraine in his New Year’s speech on Tuesday, but praised Russian soldiers for their “bravery and courage.”
