Lévy, who was sentenced in absentia, found himself at the center of a case that has become a symbol of tightening politics in Tunisia, Figaro reported.
The verdict was handed down on November 27 behind closed doors, and foreign observers were not allowed access.
This verdict represents the continuation of the case against about 40 opposition representatives and public figures in Tunisia, according to the Paris newspaper.
The investigation dates back to 2023, when authorities interpreted a lunch in a Tunis suburb that brought together opposition figures as the start of a coordinated campaign of destabilization.
This was followed by a series of arrests and trials held in 2024 and 2025 under controversial conditions, according to Figaro.
The organization Amnesty International described the trials as unfair, while Human Rights Watch condemned the procedure, which, as stated by the NGO, did not respect the guarantees of an independent trial.
Lévy’s involvement in this case is marginal, and the details of the accusation against him are very unclear, according to Figaro. He is accused of having contributed, through his alleged connections with certain figures from Tunisia and abroad, to the forging of a conspiracy against the internal security of that country.
The Tunisian authorities, however, have not published any material evidence, and there are also no direct links between him and the main defendants, adds Figaro.
Lévy claims that he was accused based on a mass of unrelated elements and unfounded assumptions, adding that he had not been in Tunisia for 10 years.
He also stated that he does not know most of the people named in the indictment.
As Lévy described it, “Stalin, Kafka and Orwell” came together in the verdict against him.
At the same time, he pointed out that the other accused were mainly political opponents and human rights activists who were sentenced to sentences ranging from two to 45 years in prison.
