In the occasion of the “World Hepatitis Day”, the Association of the Partnership for Health, in cooperation with Lenis Pharmacy Ltd., the Association of Infectologists in BiH – Bohemsa organizes free hapatitis and HIV, Banja Luci, Zenica and Mostar on 28.07.2025. . In Sarajevo, the testing will be organized from 12-18h in the Importanne Center, while in other cities will be carried out within the clinic for infectious diseases during the same day.
Viral hepatitis is an inflammation of liver caused by hepatitis type A, B, C, D and E. Fecal-oral roads (so-called viruses of hepatitis B, sex, but the transfer is possible from the child during childbirth. In addition to viral causes that are the most common, hepatitis can be caused by alcohol, certain medications, toxic substances and autoimmic processes.
The world health organization estimates that more than 300 million people are globally has chronic hepatitis B or C, and each year more than 1.3 million people die due to complications of this disease, including cirrhosis and liver cancer. Also, more two million new hepatitis B or C infections are recorded, although a large number of cases remain undiagnosed due to limited access to testing and low levels of disease awareness. In the Federation of BiH, the number of registered cases of hepatitis B in the last three years ranges between 30 and 50, while the number of registered new cases of Hepatitis C was between 21 and 34.
However, the projection models used by world health institutions show that the number of persons living for chronic hepatitis B or C in Bosnia and Herzegovina can move between 25,000 and 40,000. A large number of these people are unaware that they are infected, because hepatitis can progress for years without symptoms. Contemporary, highly efficient drugs for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B and C, provided through the Health Insurance Institute in the Federation of BiH, Republika Srpska and Brčko District are available in BiH. Hepatitis C Treatment is carried out directly with antivirus drugs which in more than 95% of cases lead to healing, while hepatitis B is treated with long-lasting therapy that slows the response of the disease. However, due to the lack of systematic testing, the actual number of people who need therapy is probably higher. Prevention of viral hepatitis implies vaccination against hepatitis B, respecting hygienic standards and drinking water, the use of sterile instruments in medical and cosmetic practice, avoiding Igala and accessories for personal hygiene and safe sex.
On the occasion of the World’s Hepatitis Day, which is celebrated on 28. July, we invite all citizens to be tested on hepatitis B and C. Testing is crucial because many infected have no symptoms for years, and the disease can progress to cirrhosis or liver cancer. Don’t wait for symptoms. Test yourself. Hepatitis can be treated, even cure, but only if it is detected in time.
