The leaders of the continent warn that such an agreement could threaten the security of the whole of Europe and encourage Moscow to new aggressions, according to Reuters.
Although the Ukrainians and Europeans managed to reject the most pro-Russian parts of the American plan, their influence on the negotiations is limited. Europe was not involved in the recent US-Ukraine talks in Florida, and will not play a key role during Trump’s upcoming diplomacy with Putin.
“It is slowly becoming clear that an ugly deal will be reached,” warns analyst Luuk van Middelaar.
European officials also fear that potential concessions to Moscow, combined with US-Russian economic cooperation, would give Russia the means to strengthen its military.
Kaja Kallas, head of the European Union’s foreign policy, said:
“If the Russian military is big and their budget is huge, they will want to use that power again.”
Europe is struggling to wield influence despite billions in aid to Ukraine and plans by the coalition of the “willing” for post-war security.
Experts warn that the lack of own military capacity and absence from the negotiating table leaves Europe vulnerable and dependent on the decisions of the US.
