“Good evening and welcome. On behalf of the US Embassy and the American People, thank you for joining us in the celebration 249. Birthdays of the United States.
Every year, the Fourth of July, Americans gather to mark the signing of the independence declaration in 1776. years – the act initiated not only by revolution, but also a continuous experiment of building democracy.
We are marking that day tonight in Sarajevo, bringing you a fraction of a unique place in America – New Orleans.
Why is New Orleans? Because it is a city that reflects the best in the spirit, creativity and resistance of America.
Founded more than three hundred years ago, New Orleans was always a city in which various influences were connected – French, Spanish, African, Caribbean, Indian together by forming something extremely American, and yet completely his.
New Orleans is a hometown of jazz – music forms credible from improvisation, interaction and soul. In the music you listen tonight you can hear that spirit: joyful, defiant and full of life.
The home is culinary traditions that connect rustic and refined, where a simple sandwich “by ‘Boy” carries century story and flavors. This is where you can try it here tonight.
And yes – no celebration in New Orleans is complete without carnival beads of Mardi Gra. If you got them tonight, you will notice that they come in three colors: purple, green and golden. Each color has a specific meaning – purple for justice, green for faith, and gold for power. They are more than festive decorations, they are the symbols of the ideals that run not only the city of New Orleans, but also an American democratic spirit.
Because justice, faith and responsible use of the power of the core are what we strive as a nation. They remind us that democracy depends on fairness, faith in a better future and a leader who serve the people.
In so many ways, New Orleans tells the story of America: It’s not a perfect story, but the story of persistence, transformation and hope is.
And we find that spirit of resistance here in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
And this country is a crossroads of cultures. And she faced and faced with great challenges and continues to deal with the complex legacy of her past. But always again, throughout Bosnia and Herzegovina, we encounter people who are committed to better future – people investing in their communities, educate the next generation, keep their rich heritage and encourage reforms that serve general good.
The United States is proud that your partner are on this trip.
We remain committed support to sovereignty, territorial integrity and the multiethnic character of Bosnia and Herzegovina. And we support its path to the future with more democracy, security and prosperity. But we also want to say clearly: these goals cannot be achieved only from outside. Leadership and courage are needed to come from within.
The United States expects the citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and especially their elected leaders -, many of which are here tonight – cooperate in the construction of functional, democratic and more advanced countries.
This means to choose a compromise, not division. Progress rather than politics. And next generation instead of the following choices.
This means appreciating the past country without one-sided access or separation, and with the finding of strength in a joint purpose and in favor of everyone.
It is also a message of New Orleans. Jazz does not arise when everyone plays his melody – he revives only when people listen to each other, trust each other and create something that is bigger than themselves.
That’s why tonight we celebrate 249. America’s independence day – with the rhythm of jazz, the taste of po’boys and beads around the neck – remember that democracy is more than the final destination. She is something that is done on every day. It is the process of construction, renewal and belief in what is greater than ourselves.
Let us pay tribute to that spirit tonight – not only with music, food, friendship, but also to the common commitment to shaping the future of our values.
From the Gulf of Louisiane to Rijeka and the Hill of Bosnia and Herzegovina, it connects us more from diplomacy – our hope, our history and what we still need to do.
And now, let us make a toast – fourth July, a day that celebrates freedom, resistance and a permanent promise of democracy. May the Holy Spirit of today be all the inspiration to work together for a better tomorrow. Happy Independence Day! “
