In one of the operating rooms of the Clinical Hospital Center (KBC) Rebro in Zagreb, an operating lamp weighing about 80 kilograms detached from the ceiling and fell.
At the time of the incident, there were neither patients nor medical staff in the hall, the hospital administration announced, reports Dnevnik.hr
Acting deputy director of KBC Rebro Milivoj Novak confirmed that the incident happened during the weekend and pointed out that no one was in danger.
According to him, the lamp fell during a routine check of the equipment.
Possible cause of vibration from the construction site
The hospital administration stated that the incident occurred in a 19-year-old building, which was not included in the current reconstruction after the earthquake.
As a possible cause of the fall of the equipment, Novak cited vibrations from nearby construction sites, which, he said, could have led to loosening of the screws.
When asked if the lamp was improperly installed, he replied that it was difficult to determine, adding that he considered the age of the equipment and vibrations to be the most likely causes of the incident.
All operating theaters checked
After the incident, a check of all other operating theaters was launched.
The hospital management announced that this was an isolated case and that all other operating lights were inspected and additionally secured.
When asked what would have happened if the lamp had fallen on the patient, Novak replied that it could not have happened because the equipment is regularly checked.
However, when the journalist pointed out to him that the lamp fell during the inspection, he replied:
“It was thought that there wouldn’t even be an earthquake, so there was an earthquake,” they report Independent newspaper.
