According to UEFA’s data on fan behavior in European Championship qualifiers, Bosnia and Herzegovina was among the countries with the worst fan behavior in Europe.
They are on the infamous list in front of Bosnia and Herzegovina Albania, Croatia and Serbiawhile they are behind Cyprus and Turkey.
In its assessment, UEFA takes into account a number of criteria that bring or deduct points from national teams. Points are awarded for sportsmanship, such as applause for the opposing team, fan choreography, support songs and cheers for opposing players.
On the other hand, points are deducted for incidents such as running onto the pitch, offensive songs and shouts, throwing pyrotechnics, use of laser pointers, violence near the stadium and cases of racism and discrimination.
Since Bosnia and Herzegovina has been punished several times in the last few years for fan outbursts, this ranking is not surprising. However, the surprise is on the positive side of the scale – among the best-behaved fans there are English, who, according to UEFA’s data, ranked at the very top.
Apart from England, they are among the most disciplined Moldova, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Luxembourg and the Faroe Islands, which shows that smaller football associations often record a higher level of fan culture.
