In the meantime, a video of the perpetrators from a surveillance camera in the Louvre appeared on social networks. The video shows one of the robbers breaking the glass with the jewels.
The robbery itself lasted about four minutes, Culture Minister Rachida Dati told TF1, and it was carried out by professionals.
On BFMTV, Paris prosecutor Laure Beccuau said that around sixty investigators were involved in the robbery investigation and that there was “absolute determination” to find the thieves. She also discovered that the platform the criminals used to enter the museum was brought by the burglars themselves. “They threatened the guards who were present at the scene,” explained Laure Beccuau. According to her, “the alarm was active.”
The Ministry of Culture announced that the alarms, installed on the exterior window of the Apollo gallery, as well as on two high-security display cases, “were on” at the time of the break-in. They also stated that guards “were present in the room and adjacent areas, immediately reacted to inform the police and ensure the evacuation of visitors” and claim that thanks to this “criminals were forced to flee, leaving behind their equipment”.
Stolen royal and imperial jewels
The Ministry of Culture confirmed that eight historical items from the royal and imperial collections, including diadems, necklaces and a pair of earrings, were stolen from two display cases. Empress Eugénie’s crown, which was also a target, fell out during the escape and was found damaged near the museum. Her condition is currently being evaluated.
The museum temporarily closed the Apollo gallery and launched a security audit; the ministry and the president of the state announced that the perpetrators will be found and brought to court. Experts warn that although the objects are extremely recognizable and theoretically difficult to sell, there is a risk that they could be dismantled or melted down to conceal their origin.
Macron announced
French President Emmanuel Macron also spoke about the robbery.
“The theft committed in the Louvre is an attack on the heritage we value because it is part of our history. We will return the stolen works and the perpetrators will be brought to justice. Everything is being done, everywhere, to achieve this, under the leadership of the Paris prosecutor’s office,” said Emmanuel Macron.
He also promised increased security measures at the Louvre, which he said would ensure the preservation and protection of historical and cultural heritage.
