The US military has been ramping up its presence in the Caribbean Sea for two months, with warships, B-52 bombers, F 35s, drones, marines and satellite surveillance, in what the BBC describes as the world’s largest superpower deployment in decades.
The US says the attacks are targeting drug traffickers, but critics and analysts see it as a pressure campaign aimed at toppling the government of Nicolas Maduro.
Geopolitical analysts believe that the goal is to cause a split within the army and the inner circle of the government, and not a direct invasion. Strikes on airports, ports or military facilities in Venezuela are also possible, and even arrest and extradition operations.
However, the question remains how long US forces will remain in the region and whether this sufficiently undermines loyalty to Madura’s entourage.
As Washington raises the bar and announces covert CIA operations, many experts warn that without clear evidence and support from the military in Venezuela, the overthrow of the regime remains uncertain.
