USA: A skydiving plane crashed, 12 people died

A private plane carrying paratroopers crashed in the US state of Missouri, killing all 12 people on board, authorities said.

The accident happened yesterday, shortly after takeoff near Butler Memorial Airport, which is located about 100 kilometers south of Kansas City.

The plane was operated by Skydive Kansas City.

“Unfortunately, all 12 people on the plane lost their lives in this accident,” the company said in a statement.

The pilot was among the dead.

The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced that it was a Pacific Aerospace P750 single-engine plane.

Bates County Acting Airport Administrator and Emergency Management Director Dennis Jacobs told Reuters the plane took off around 11:20 a.m. local time.

According to him, the aircraft failed to gain the required altitude after takeoff. Witnesses saw it make a sharp left turn, after which it crashed about 274 meters from the runway, near the highway.

Emergency responders searched the entire flight path to determine if anyone tried to jump out of the plane while it was losing altitude, but found no evidence to support that, Jacobs added.

The cause of the crash is currently unknown.

The US National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), which is leading the investigation, said that investigators will arrive at the scene of the accident today.

The final report on the cause of the crash is expected within 12 to 24 months, agencies report citing the NTSB.

Bates County Sheriff Chad Anderson said at a news conference that based on what we know so far, it appears to be an accident.

He added that some members of the passengers’ families witnessed the plane crash.

Photos from the scene of the accident show parts of the blue and silver fuselage of the wrecked plane scattered on the grass, while numerous teams of emergency services intervened at the scene of the tragedy, reports DW.
