The first US plan, which included handing over territories Russia had not seized from Ukraine, was seen by Kiev and its European allies as giving in too hard to Russia’s hard-line demands and has since been revised.
A Ukrainian official familiar with the latest version told AFP that it “takes into account the Ukrainian vision – it is a further proposal for adequate solutions to the problematic issues”.
– We are not revealing the details while we are waiting for the reaction of the American side – the official added.
Trump, who pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to agree to the American plan, quickly expressed impatience with Kiev and its European allies in France, Great Britain and Germany.
His comments come amid a growing rift with Europe after he described it as “declining” and “weak” over immigration and Ukraine, days after a new US national security strategy warned the continent risks “civilizational wipeout”.
“We talked about Ukraine in pretty strong terms,” Trump told reporters when asked about his phone conversation with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
On Monday, Ukraine’s European allies expressed support for Zelensky, expressing skepticism about parts of the latest US proposal to end the war launched by Russia in February 2022.
Trump added that the Europeans wanted to hold new talks this weekend, but warned that they risked “wasting time”.
– I think we had some small disputes about people and we will see how it will end. And we said, before we go to the meeting, we want to know some things,” Trump added.
– They would like us to go to a meeting in Europe over the weekend, and we will make a decision depending on what they tell us. We don’t want to waste time. – said the American president.
