According to the directives of the President of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the United Arab Emirates has provided support to strengthen the World Health Organization’s efforts to combat the Ebola epidemic in Africa. This was done through the UAE Aid Agency, WAM reported.
Sheikh Shakhbout bin Nahyan Al Nahyan, Minister of State, affirmed the UAE’s commitment to providing emergency assistance for crisis and disaster relief as part of its humanitarian mission and global responsibility.
– The UAE is determined to extend its support in the fight against diseases and epidemics that threaten humanity anywhere, in coordination with governments, international organizations and relevant regional institutions – he explained.
He added: “Reports and data from the World Health Organization have shown the seriousness of the active cross-border spread of the Bundibugyo Ebola virus strain. This calls for a doubling of international efforts to prevent its transmission among different age groups in Africa, a goal that the UAE is working on in partnership with various governments and UN organizations.”
Sheikh Shahbout also pointed out that the UAE continues its multiple health support and assistance to the affected communities by providing medical assistance, supplying approved vaccines and necessary drugs, and collaborating with international and local organizations to provide the best possible health care in designated treatment centers.
Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, recently warned that the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo is still out of control. He pointed to several challenges, including the difficulty of isolating and tracing contacts of infected people, and stressed the importance of 90% isolation to stop the spread.
