Turkey has decided to allow a pro-Kurdish party in parliament to hold talks with militant leader Abdullah Ocalan in his prison on the island, the pro-government Sabah newspaper reported on Thursday, marking the first such visit in nearly a decade.

A delegation from the Democratic Party (DEM) is expected to visit the prison on Imrali Island on Thursday or Friday, Sabah said on its website, without specifying the source of the information, Reuters reports.

The decision comes after a key ally of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan proposed the move as part of efforts to end the 40-year conflict between the state and Ocalan’s outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militant group.
