According to American media, the son of the newly elected president intends to stay on the island during a one-day private visit.
Donald Trump sparked controversy by declaring that “ownership and control of Greenland is critical to US national security.” Earlier during his first term, he showed interest in buying this Arctic island, but the Greenlandic leaders rejected his proposals both times. Prime Minister Mute Egede reiterated: “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland and is not for sale.”
Trump confirmed his son’s trip on Truth Social, noting that the visit will include a tour of “the island’s most magnificent sights.” He also stated that Greenland “will benefit greatly if it becomes part of the US”, adding:
“We will make Greenland great again!”
The Danish government did not comment on Trump Jr.’s private visit, while the Ministry of Defense announced an increase in defense investment in Greenland. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized that the timing of the announcement was enhanced by irony given Trump’s statements, Index reports.
Denmark’s King Frederik X further emphasized Greenland’s symbolic importance by changing the royal coat of arms to more prominently depict the territory, which some interpreted as a response to Trump’s rhetoric. However, Prime Minister Egede used his New Year’s speech to call again for the island’s independence, calling it a “liberation goal”.
Trump recently threatened that the US would take back control of the Panama Canal because of what he claims are “excessive fees” charged by Panama. The Panamanian president responded by declaring that “every meter of the canal belongs to Panama.” Trump also proposed that Canada become the 51st US federal state.
