A federal judge on Friday ordered President Donald Trump’s name removed from the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, ruling that the famous Washington cultural institution cannot be renamed without Congressional action.
The Trump administration has been given 14 days to remove all signs bearing his name and delete the name “Trump Kennedy Center” from official materials, Reuters reports.
The decision was made by federal judge Christopher Cooper following a lawsuit by Democratic Congresswoman Joyce Beatty. The center’s board of directors previously announced that the institution may be renamed the Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Memorial Center for the Performing Arts.
Judge Cooper stated that the law clearly defines the name of the center and that only Congress has the right to change it. The White House has not yet commented on the decision.
