US President Donald Trump will soon sign executive orders ending the diversity, equality and inclusion program in the military and returning to work thousands of soldiers dismissed because they refused to be vaccinated against the virus during the covid-19 pandemic, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced on Monday.
Hegseth, a former Fox News host and war veteran, was confirmed as secretary in the US Senate with minimal support – he received 51 votes to 50, reports Hina.
He was not supported by three Republicans, so as the 51st, the vote of Trump’s vice president, JD Vance, decided. It is the second time in American history that the vice president has intervened with his vote in the Senate when confirming ministers, according to American media.
“More executive orders are coming,” Hegseth told reporters as he arrived at the Pentagon on his first day in office.
Hegseth has promised to bring major changes to the Department of Defense, one of his priorities being the elimination of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion program, known collectively by the US acronym DEI.
