US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened as soon as a “grand deal” is signed to end the war with Iran, which he expects could be concluded in the coming days.
Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office, Trump said the United States had reached a “major agreement on war with Iran.”
– The strait will be officially opened as soon as we sign the agreement, which could be soon, very soon, maybe during the weekend in Europe – said Trump.
Earlier in the day, the American president announced that he was abandoning the planned military strikes on Iran, which were scheduled for Thursday evening, and announced the possibility of reaching an agreement with Tehran after talks at the highest political level.
Trump stated on the social network Truth Social that the negotiations with the Islamic Republic of Iran were raised to the highest level of the Iranian leadership and that is why he decided to cancel the planned attacks and bombings.
According to him, the key points of the agreement have been agreed upon by all parties involved, including the United States, Israel and several regional allies.
– The time and place of the signing will be announced soon – said Trump, adding that the US naval blockade of Iran will remain in force until the agreement is concluded.
So far, there has been no official reaction from Iran.
In recent weeks, Trump has sent mixed messages, simultaneously talking about a possible deal and threatening new military action. Just a day earlier, he accused Tehran of “taking advantage” of the American side during the negotiations.
Before announcing the withdrawal of the attack, Trump announced “very strong” strikes on Iran and the possibility of taking over key Iranian oil infrastructure, which would represent a significant escalation of the conflict.
