For the past four years, the agency was managed by the administration of the former Democratic US President Biden. In a briefing on recovery efforts, Trump, a Republican, pledged to urgently help North Carolina get the help it needs to rebuild.
He said he would rather individual states be given federal money and manage disasters themselves than depend on FEMA.
He said he would sign an executive order aimed at fixing FEMA’s ongoing problems.
“I think we will propose that FEMA disappear,” he said. Trump complained that Biden did not do enough to help North Carolina recover from the hurricane, a charge the Biden administration dismissed as misinformation.

The president also sharply criticized the response of Democratic officials to the wildfires in Los Angeles that caused extensive damage this month. Trump is scheduled to visit Los Angeles later, as three massive wildfires continue to threaten the region.
