Trump first floated the idea of a “51st state” during a dinner with Trudeau in late November. During that meeting, the newly elected US president joked that if Canada could not survive the 25 percent tariffs, it could become the 51st US state, reports the Fox News channel.
Since then, he has repeatedly described Canada’s head of government as a governor in social media posts, a title that in the United States designates the head of the executive branch of a federal state.
Trudeau, who was head of the Liberal Party for 11 years and prime minister for nine years, has faced a series of crises, from Donald Trump’s tariff threats to the resignations of key allies and disastrous poll results.
