“He would like to end the war,” the US president told reporters at the White House.
Trump’s comment came a day after Putin received US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law and informal adviser Jared Kushner in Moscow, who discussed with the Russian president a revised US draft peace plan for Ukraine.
The talks did not bring any progress because Russia does not want to budge on key demands, which include, among other things, the Ukrainian surrender of part of the territory that Moscow did not conquer.
Trump confirmed that he spoke with Witkoff and Kushner last night.
“I can tell you they had a pretty good meeting with President Putin. We’ll see,” he said.

He added that he could not speak about the outcome yet: “What will come out of that meeting, I cannot tell you.”
Asked further by reporters about allegations that the Kremlin had steadfastly refused to compromise, Trump responded: “I don’t know what the Kremlin is doing. I can tell you they had a pretty good meeting with President Putin. We’ll see what comes out of that. I can’t tell you because it takes two to tango.”
