Trump had earlier tried to pressure New Delhi to end purchases of Russian oil by imposing 50 percent tariffs on Indian products, a request he said Modi had accepted during a phone call on Wednesday, calling the decision a “major U-turn.”
“He’s not buying his oil from Russia anymore. It’s started. You know, it can’t be done right away. It takes a process, but that process will be completed soon,” Trump told reporters at the White House.
“All we want from President Putin is to stop it, stop killing Ukrainians and stop killing Russians. Because he’s killing a lot of Russians. It doesn’t paint him in a good light. It’s a war he should have won in a week, and now it’s going into its fourth year,” the US president said.
Trump has repeatedly emphasized that limiting the purchase of Russian oil on the international market can speed up the end of Russia’s war against Ukraine. He added that he would now focus on China, so that it would stop buying Russian oil, like India.
