President Donald Trump said he will “most likely” delay the ban on TikTok for 90 days after he takes office on Monday, but noted that he has not yet made a final decision in an interview with NBC News on Saturday.
Trump said it would be “appropriate” to grant an extension to the Chinese social platform, which was banned last year by bipartisan legislation that was upheld by the Supreme Court this week.
“I think that would certainly be an option that we would consider. A 90-day extension is something that will most likely be done because it is appropriate. We must consider it carefully. It’s a very big situation,” Trump said in the interview.
“If I decide to do it, I’ll probably announce it on Monday,” he added.
CNN has reached out to Trump’s transition team for comment.
Without an extension, TikTok will shut down on Sunday. Last year’s law allows the president to delay the ban from the start for 90 days, but requires evidence that the parties working on a deal to sell TikTok to the US company have made significant progress.
TikTok CEO Shou Chew met with Trump at his Mar-a-Lago home weeks before the ban is set to take effect, and is also expected to attend Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
