President Donald Trump has requested the deployment of an additional 500 National Guard members to Washington, DC, after two guardsmen were wounded in a shooting, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said Wednesday.
Hegseth will forward the request to the Secretary of the Army.
– This will only strengthen our determination to make Washington safe and beautiful – he said.
A suspect is in custody in Washington DC after allegedly shooting two National Guardsmen, according to the Metropolitan Police Department.

Vice President JD Vance said Wednesday that the motive for the shooting that wounded two National Guard members is still unknown, describing the incident as a “sad reminder” of the risks service members face.
– You may have already seen it on your phones or social networks, but it seems that a few hours ago there was a shooting in front of the White House. We are still investigating what happened. We don’t know the motive. “There’s a lot we have yet to discover,” Vance said during a speech at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
– First, I want to ask all believers to pray for those two members of the National Guard – he added.
– I think this is a sad reminder that our soldiers – whether they are active duty, reserve or National Guard – are the sword and shield of the United States of America – he said.
As a reminder, two members of the National Guard were killed on Wednesday in Washington, West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey confirmed on social networks.
