Bosnia and Herzegovina has officially informed the Republic of Croatia that it intends to participate in the environmental impact assessment procedure for the project to build a long-term storage facility for radioactive waste at Trgovska gora.
This information was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
“Namely, after the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Green Transition of Croatia in June notified BiH formally about the initiation of this procedure and requested an answer as to whether BiH intends, in accordance with the Espo Convention, to participate in cross-border consultations, the Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of BiH forwarded to the Croatian side, together with its letter, the response of the Ministry of Spatial Planning, Construction and Ecology of the Republic of Srpska as a contact point for the Espo Convention,” the statement reads.
It is added that the response pointed out that Croatia’s notification is unclear, incomplete, untimely, and that it is not aligned with Espo and other international conventions.
“It was also pointed out the key shortcomings of Croatia’s procedures in relation to the project in question and the need to return the entire misguided procedure to a much earlier stage, and the previous requests for the delivery of relevant information and documentation, as well as for the formation of a joint body and/or the conclusion of a special bilateral agreement on this matter, were highlighted again,” it is pointed out.
The Ministry reminds the public that Croatia has not yet submitted the Environmental Impact Study or any impact assessment documentation. The subject notification actually only announced the process of consultations and public hearings after the Study is completed and submitted.
“The Ministry of Foreign Trade and Economic Relations of Bosnia and Herzegovina continues to coordinate activities, as well as the legal fight before several international bodies against this unconscionably led Croatian project. We emphasize that the Republic of Croatia should, instead of building the center in question, act in accordance with its international obligations and generally accepted principles of international law, and that the radioactive waste from the Krško Nuclear Power Plant be stored in the country where it was created and which is ready to accept it – the Republic of Slovenia,” they emphasize.
They add that this is the only correct and acceptable solution for both the population of BiH and the population of Croatia, especially bearing in mind the fact that the election of the Circassian was carried out with gross violations of international standards in the field of environmental protection, nuclear energy and human rights, and especially with obvious environmental discrimination of the local population, writes Klix.
