In a serious traffic accident near Braunschweig, Germany, three people were killed after a car plunged off a bridge into the Mittelland Canal, while two people were seriously injured, one of whom is in a life-threatening condition, local police confirmed.
According to the first information, the accident was caused by a driver who overtook several vehicles at an inappropriate speed, lost control of the car and hit the guard rail of the bridge. After a head-on collision with another vehicle, it broke through the fence and landed in the canal.
Two injured people from the other vehicle were transported to the hospital, one person by helicopter due to serious injuries. A total of five vehicles were involved in the accident, and the identity of the victims has not yet been released.
Federal road B4 is closed, and emergency services, firefighters and rescue helicopters are on the ground. A complex operation is underway to pull the car out of the canal, for which a ship from Hanover has been hired. Because of this, navigation on the Mittelland Canal has also been suspended.
Photos from the scene of the crash show a black car completely destroyed, its roof almost detached, while rescue teams secure the area.
