The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the attack on a vehicle that, according to them, was “moving suspiciously” in a zone of active fighting, and announced an investigation.
The attack took place near the village of Kfar Tebnit, not far from Nabatieh, in an area that has been hit by intense conflict and population displacement in recent months. The Lebanese army condemned the attack, calling it “aggressive and barbaric”.
The IDF claims that the vehicle was in the zone from which Hezbollah operates and that any movement of military forces in the area had to be coordinated with the Israeli army. At the same time, they emphasized that their operations are not directed against the Lebanese army, but against Hezbollah.
Clashes between Israel and Hezbollah have been ongoing since March, when the group stepped up rocket and drone attacks on northern Israel. Although Israel is not at direct war with the Lebanese government, fighting in southern Lebanon continues despite attempts to reach a ceasefire.
The latest incident came after Hezbollah rejected initiatives to restore a US-brokered truce. The Lebanese government advocates a ceasefire and considers it necessary for state institutions to take full control of the security situation in the country.
According to data from the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least 3,550 people have died since the beginning of the conflict. In an interview with CNN, Lebanese President Joseph Aoun said that the people are “fed up with war” and partly blamed Iran for the situation in the country, which provoked a sharp reaction from the Iranian foreign minister.
