The protest reflects widespread concern about the budget’s economic impact on citizens and the business sector, including an increase in social security contributions and a doubling of dividend taxes.
Protesters formed a human chain around the parliament building and tried to block MPs’ vehicles, which led to police intervention to prevent violence. The police said that the protesters threw bottles and firecrackers at the officers and that three police officers were injured.
Despite opposition from various social groups and warnings from economists that the draft budget carries significant risks, it is expected to be adopted as the coalition government has a stable majority in parliament.
The budget predicts a record level of state spending of almost 46% of GDP. The increase will be mainly financed by higher taxes for companies and workers and by a sharp increase in the public debt.
