In recent months, the Pentagon has deployed troops and military equipment needed for a possible US attack on Cuba, pending a final decision by President Donald Trump, US media reported, citing administration and military sources.
According to officials, Trump considered the possibility of an invasion after economic and political pressures failed to bring down the communist government in Havana.
The US Navy currently has one of the largest military presences in the world outside of the Middle East precisely in the Caribbean region.

In May, the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier strike group sailed into the Caribbean Sea along with destroyers and cruisers equipped with guided missiles capable of precision strikes against land targets.

At the same time, US drones and reconnaissance planes have been flying over the area around Cuba for months, according to data from the flight tracking service.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said during the cabinet session that Cuba is “in big trouble”, adding that “a failed country only 90 miles from the US coast is a threat to US national security”.
According to military analysts, the deployed force gives Washington more military options, including precision airstrikes or operations targeting the Cuban political leadership.
Former Pentagon official Mark Cancian stated that the presence of the USS Nimitz carrier is probably primarily intended for intimidation, but that it could also be used in a possible military operation.
“The airstrikes could be carried out to destroy Cuba’s air defenses or even target the country’s political elite,” Cancian said, adding that former Cuban President Raul Castro could be among the first targets.
At the same time, US military forces face problems due to extended missions. Several large warships are at sea for almost ten months, significantly longer than the usual rotations of between six and seven months.

Pentagon officials warn that long-term deployments could further strain crews and make future ship maintenance difficult, especially as the U.S. Navy conducts parallel operations in the Middle East, according to Politico.
