The African long-distance runner tested positive in April for the banned diuretic hydrochlorothiazide, which can also act as a mask for other banned substances in sports. Three months later, she was temporarily suspended, and now the sentence has been officially confirmed. A further investigation was announced. Chepngetich initially denied the use of banned substances, but later explained the positive result to a cold medicine she took two days before the test. Since the athlete later admitted to the alleged violations, her sentence was reduced by one year. However, new problems arose: investigators suspected that she might have used banned substances in the past, and decided to expand the investigation. – The case related to the positive test for HCTZ has been resolved, but the AIU will continue the investigation to determine if there were other violations – said the head of the AIU, Brett Clothier. Chepngetich set the fastest time in the history of the women’s marathon in Chicago last October – two hours, nine minutes and 56 seconds. All her results obtained before the sample was taken on March 14th still remain valid. (Vijesti.ba)
