The United States is expected to announce it will send $1.25 billion in military aid to Ukraine, US officials said Friday, as the Biden administration seeks to collect as much aid as possible for Kiev before leaving office on January 20.

The large aid package includes a significant amount of ammunition, including for advanced surface-to-air missile systems and the HAWK air defense system. It will also provide Stinger missiles and 155mm and 105mm artillery shells, officials said.

The officials, who said they expected a decision to be announced Monday, spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details that have not yet been released.

The new aid was announced after Russia launched a series of attacks on Ukrainian power facilities in recent days, although Ukraine said it had intercepted a significant number of missiles and drones.

Russian and Ukrainian forces are also still locked in a bitter battle over the Russian border region of Kursk, where Moscow has sent thousands of North Korean troops to help retake territory seized by Ukraine, Reuters reports.
