The United Nations (UN) is sending a team of experts to Lebanon to investigate possible violations of international law by all sides in the current conflict in that country, UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk announced today.
A statement from his office said an agreement had been reached with the Lebanese government to send an impartial and independent fact-finding mission to Lebanon.
The goal of the mission is to gather evidence on alleged violations of international human rights law and international humanitarian law by all participants in the conflict.
Since the start of the war with Iran at the end of February, there has been a re-intensification of fighting between Israel and Hezbollah, an Iranian-backed militia, on Lebanese territory.
Although a ceasefire was reached between the Israeli and Lebanese governments, it did not stop the fighting because Hezbollah is not a signatory to the agreement.
In mutual cross-border attacks, the loss of life continued, with civilians dying daily in Lebanon, reports DPA.
