The United Nations said on Friday that the killing of two Palestinians in the occupied West Bank by Israeli security forces while they appeared to surrender and were unarmed amounted to “summary murder”.
– We are appalled by the brazen murder committed yesterday by Israeli border police officers against two Palestinians in Jenin, in another apparent summary execution – said UN Human Rights Office spokesman Jeremy Laurence at a briefing in Geneva.
Palestine TV released footage showing the two men killed appeared to be unarmed and ready to surrender during a raid in the occupied West Bank on Thursday.
The Israeli military and police issued a joint statement saying an investigation had been launched after forces opened fire on the suspects as they exited the building.
The statement added that the two killed were wanted persons linked to a “terrorist network in the Jenin area”, but did not provide details of the alleged charges or evidence of their involvement.
Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, whose authority was extended to include the Border Police in the occupied West Bank in 2022, issued a statement giving his “full support” to the army and police unit involved in the shooting.
– The combat team acted exactly as expected – the terrorists should die – he wrote on the X platform.
Laurence responded by saying: “We have heard those comments and of course they must be condemned because such a reaction, with such a brutal use of force, is nothing short of abhorrent.”
