Children under the age of 16 will be banned from using social networks, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced.
Starmer says that social networks make children unhappy, make it easier for bullies to abuse children and are “designed to be addictive”.
A ban would give children more time, security and more freedom to grow up – as well as more opportunities, he adds.
“That’s all any parent wants. They want to know that Britain is going to be better for their children, that they’re going to get a fair chance,” the Prime Minister said in a speech in Downing Street.
Starmer added that the government is “unprepared to compromise” when it comes to the safety and happiness of children – and that includes regulating and enforcing this ban.
He says the government has been listening and learning from countries like Australia, where a similar ban has already been introduced.
The government is also going a step further with “world-leading measures” when it comes to video game services and live streaming platforms, he said, according to the BBC.
If the law is passed by parliament, the ban will take effect by spring 2027, he added.
