Skin health is often neglected until visible changes appear. However, modern dermatology today enables quick and accurate detection of skin problems, even at the earliest stage. We talked about the importance of regular examinations, dermatoscopy and modern treatments such as chemical peeling prim. Ph.D. Jasminka Rožajac, specialist in dermatovenerologywhich has many years of experience in the diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases.

How important is it to pay attention to skin changes?
The skin is our largest organ and often sends us clear signals when something is wrong. Changes such as an increase in the diameter of the mole, a change in color, irregular edges, redness around the mole, itching, the appearance of sores, scabs or bleeding may be a sign that a dermatological examination is necessary. That is exactly why it is important to react in time and not ignore such changes.
One of the examination methods that is often talked about today is dermatoscopy. What is it about?
Dermatoscopy is a surface microscopy of the skin performed using a device called a dermatoscope. This method enables a detailed examination of pigment changes on the skin, which often cannot be accurately assessed with the naked eye. Dermatoscopy helps us make an accurate diagnosis and determine whether it is a benign change or whether there is a suspicion of a malignant skin tumor.
How important is dermatoscopy in the prevention of more serious skin diseases?
It is extremely important. This method allows monitoring changes in the skin at certain time intervals – usually after three, six or twelve months. In this way, we can detect any change in time and react. Timely and accurate diagnosis are key factors in successful treatment, especially when we talk about malignant skin tumors.
Apart from diagnostics, aesthetic skin treatments are also being talked about more and more. One of them is chemical peeling. When is it recommended?
Chemical peeling is a treatment that is most often performed with preparations based on glycolic acid. This method is very effective for problems such as wrinkles, oily skin, acne-prone skin, pigmentation, freckles, as well as sun and age spots. Glycolic acid works by removing the surface layer of old skin cells and encouraging new ones to form.
What results can patients expect after such treatments?
Results are often visible after a few weeks, but this depends on the skin type and the problem being treated. Chemical peeling encourages tissue regeneration, stimulates the creation of collagen and elastin, which contributes to skin tightening and the reduction of wrinkles. After the treatment, the skin looks fresher, brighter and more hydrated, and spots, small wrinkles and scars become less visible.
What would you tell people when it comes to skin care?
The most important thing is not to ignore skin changes and regularly perform dermatological examinations. Prevention and early diagnosis can prevent more serious health problems and enable timely treatment.
