Vestea, president of the district council of the central Romanian district of Brasov, will have ten days to form a government and secure support in parliament.
– Eugen Tomac withdrew his mandate this morning, and that is why I am appointing Adrian Vestea as prime minister. At this moment, it is clear that a political solution is the right way – said Dan.
Tomac tried to form a government of technocrats, but for that proposal he did not have enough support from the parliamentary parties.
Political parties have previously assessed that a minority political government, even without a permanent parliamentary majority, would be a better solution than a technocratic cabinet, reports Reuters.
The day is trying to end a political crisis that has halted major decision-making, threatened access to European funds and sent the value of the Romanian currency, the leu, to record lows.
The next parliamentary elections in Romania are planned for 2028.
That country has never held early elections, and analysts believe that the possibility of calling them now is small, given that the far right has a significant advantage over pro-European parties in polls.
