The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that in the letter, which was sent in the last few hours, Pezeshkian warned Khamenei in an unprecedented and critical tone that the country’s governance structure in practice had deviated from official paths and that major parts of the government had come under the complete control of a certain group of Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) commanders.
According to the source, Pezeškijan emphasized that the president and the government were excluded from the main and vital decision-making process in the country, and the vacuum created by this situation opened the way for extremist currents in the IRGC to take control, reports Tanjug.
According to the intelligence official, Pezeshkiyan also stated that he is unable to lead the government and fulfill his legal obligations under such circumstances, which is why he called on Khamenei to accept his resignation immediately.
The media previously reported that the IRGC had gradually limited many of the presidency’s powers and effectively taken control of key parts of the government, and on April 28 there were reports of serious disagreements between Pezeshkian and Ahmad Vahidi, the commander of the IRGC, who is said to be the current number one person in the presidency.
Informed sources told Iran International that the root of these differences was “the way the war was conducted and its destructive consequences for people’s livelihood and the country’s economy.”
According to this report, Vahidi explicitly stated that, due to the critical conditions of war, all key and sensitive leadership positions should be directly selected and managed by the IRGC, until further notice.
