A Christmas celebration in Sainte-Anne, in the French overseas territory of Guadeloupe, turned into tragedy on Friday when a vehicle plowed into a group of people preparing for holiday activities, killing at least 10 people and injuring nine others.

According to a report by local television station Radio Caraibes Internationale (RCI), three of the injured are in critical condition. The incident happened on Schoelcher Square, opposite the municipality and the church, while the preparations for the event were coming to an end.

The cause of the accident is not yet known. Witnesses told RCI that the driver may have had a medical problem, but this has not been officially confirmed. Allegedly, the driver remained at the scene of the accident after the collision.

Firefighters, EMS and police responded quickly, and the mayor activated a crisis team to provide support to the victims and their families.
