– Allowing millions of human beings to live and die as victims of hunger represents a collective failure, an ethical depravity, a historical sin – said the Pope in a speech at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, according to AFP.
On this occasion, he said that the scourge of hunger continues to horribly affect a significant part of humanity, a day after the United Nations warned that global hunger is ‘at record levels’.
– The crisis is a ‘clear sign of the ruling insensitivity, a heartless economy’ – said Lav at the ceremony marking World Food Day, which coincided with the agency’s 80th anniversary.
Drastic aid cuts, led by the United States and other rich countries, including Britain, France and Germany, threaten to undermine the fight against poverty and hunger.
Experts warned earlier this year that the cuts could lead to more than 14 million avoidable deaths by 2030.
Lav highlighted the ‘shameful paradoxes’ of massive amounts of food being thrown away around the world ‘while multitudes of people struggle to find something to eat’.
– How can we explain the inequalities that allow a few to have everything, while the many have nothing – said the Pope.
