The police came to the field after a tip-off and suspicion that the slaughter was being carried out contrary to the regulations. The arrival of the officials was not welcomed – the family members were, as reported, “less than enthusiastic”. The situation escalated when one of the men threatened the patrol with a knife.
During the arrest, seven people were taken into custody, while the others present ran away before the police could identify them. The epilogue of this extraordinary event is eight slaughtered chickens, but also 15 birds that survived. The police took them over and handed them over to the local veterinary service in Bad Cekingen, a place near the German-Swiss border, not far from Basel, reports dpa.
The police will continue to check whether the family violated regulations on animal welfare and hygiene standards.
