The new Air Quality Index in FBiH has been in use since today and represents a modernized way of informing the public about the state of the air, based on the methodology of the European Environment Agency. The Federal Hydrometeorological Institute officially performs calculations according to this standard, which ensures a unique and comparable display of air quality in the territory of the Federation.
The Institute has harmonized all calculations with the latest changes in the EEA methodology, so citizens have access to an updated system that offers more precise and clearly understandable information about the current situation. This approach enables better visibility and faster understanding of air quality categories, especially in periods of increased air pollution.
In addition to the official index of the FHMZ, there are other, unofficial indexes published by various platforms, among which is the Eco Action. Such indices use different calculation methodologies and thresholds, which can lead to different interpretations of the state of the air compared to the official data of the Institute. All of them try to present air quality in a simplified way and offer health recommendations, but they have no official role in the creation or monitoring of planning documents.
Due to differences in methodologies, current air condition ratings may not be the same across platforms. Citizens are therefore recommended to follow the official FHMZ Air Quality Index or the measured concentrations published on their official website, where the valid limit values are clearly defined, for the most reliable information.
