The light that first comes on in Tešanj: 35 years of the kebab restaurant “Kod Tenija”

This is the story of the owner of the iconic kebab shop to Mahmut Vilašević (Tenia)a jump without a net and a kebab that keeps Čaršija together

Written by: Hajrudin REDŽOVIĆ

In Tešnje, at dawn, when the streets are still half-dreamy, one light comes on before the lamps. It doesn’t flicker: it burns full blast. That’s the neon above the door “At Teni’s”. While the hospital windows are just being stretched, and the ambulance drivers are counting the first coffee, Teni is already mixing the fire with the smell which, realistically, half the identity of this city. When he opens it, everything is in its place: grill, grill, a quiet “good morning”, a short joke, and then a portion that lifts both apprentices and bosses, anesthesiologists and porters.

This is the story of To Mahmut Vilašević – Tenijato the man who is October 20, 1990 instead of guaranteed “security” he chose to stand behind the counter and his name. Thirty-five years laterbehind it is a series of days that look like each other – and a city that stands firm because of it.

Leap Without a Net (1990)

Before exactly 35 yearsMahmut took down the worker’s card Wins (factory of pumps and purifiers) and hung up his apron in the area where his is Father Mujo ran a pastry shop. In those days, quitting one of the strongest state-owned firms was either madness or courage. The parents cried for days. Mahmut said – I stand by my skill and my face.

From the first day, kebab was recognizable: clean, honest, without mud. The recipe has remained the same to this day – no unnecessary embellishments, no false notes.

When everyone was on fire – he held the fire

War came as all unfortunate interruptions do. But Teni worked all four years. At the service of the army, the police, doctors, and the wounded. Here it was never “who you are” that stood out “are you hungry”. They were standing shoulder to shoulder in the line – and it was a line that restored hope normally exists.

Expansion and the Big Decision (2000)

As the business grew, 2000 came major investment and expansion to the capacity we know today. The whole house got into it: wife Beska and children, side by side with a man who is not afraid of credit when he knows he delivers quality. It has been since then “At Teni’s” became space – not just a place – and an address for everyone who loves simple and straight.

Working hours according to conscience, not according to the calendar

Until 2010 it was done from 05:30 to 17:00. When his sons finished school, Teni changed his philosophy: “Work while supplies last.” That’s why today the sign on the door is not rigid: it closes around 11, 12, 13 or 14 hours – the moment the last portion comes out from the heart, not from the fridge. At a time when everything smells like marketing, it is still guided by a simple rule: no sales without quality.

Prices without nervousness

The recipe is the same, the menu is minimalprices always affordable. No unnecessary lifting. If Teni was lifting something, it was him standard: piece by piece, year by year.

Pandemic: 68 days of silence and no termination letter

Year 2020 brought a silence that Tešanj does not remember: 68 days behind closed doors. It didn’t even occur to me then fire the worker or skip pay. This is where the accounts are kept first towards peopleand only then according to the books. Suppliers and customers will tell you the same thing: “open hand” is Teni’s business style. Chalk is written when help is needed, but debts are erased on time – he never owed anything to anyone.

Doctors, police, emergency – “inventory” of the house

Čevabdžinica is right next door General Hospital and Health Center Tešanj. Prof. Ph.D. Amir Denjalić is, as the old masters would say, “inventory” local. There are always and ambulance drivers, the policemedics who ate here as high school students, then grew into serious people – and the rest loyal customers. Tesanj learned: when Teni’s light shines at 05:30, the day can begin. Soon the lamps are also lit. Order it is not accidental.

Beska: silent command behind the counter

Through 33 years oldshe stood next to Teni Beska – wife, support and measure. She kept the rhythm, knew the orders by heart, patched up the day when it broke. A year and a half ago Beska moved. They don’t talk about her loudly in the bar, but she is every detail reminds: the fold of the cloth, the order of plates, the smile that rises when a customer shows up before six. Besca’s discipline she stayed unwritten rule of the house.

Children who outgrew the desk, but not the lesson

Mahmut is his work completed one master’s degree in law and one in economics. It’s today Mujo manager at Raiffeisen Bank in Viennaa Amir manager at Madia (former banker, now industry and real sector). Father is more proud of them than all the full plates put together.
And let’s not forget the most important: grandson Omer and granddaughter Merjem are to him the biggest commitment and the biggest smile. Merjem was born on Friday, October 17, 2025. – just in jubilee weekend pre 35th birthday čevabdžinice, which falls in Monday, October 20, 2025 Two dates, one emotion.

Sports tribune on kebab

Years ago Teni voluntarily supports sports clubs – TOŠK and Gradin. Recently, you will also see ours in the bar “Americans” – now local boys who play for Gradina – how about a portion they learn Bosnian. Because the language is best learned where it is domestic warmth stronger than grammar.

Forty years of service and – it’s not over yet

In 2024 has filled 40 years of experience. The papers say: ready to retire. The heart says: stay as long as you are needed. And that’s why Teni is still here – not because she has to, but because he likes work and loves people. It’s a difference that customers feel already at the entrance.

Bequest of one stall

If you ask Teni what the bottom line is, you won’t get a grand theory. You will get a portion that keeps its word. In a city where we like to complicate things, he already does 35 years returns simple: honest work, an open hand, the same measure for all. He didn’t change the recipedid not change menuhe did not push prices to the heavens. He only changed lives those who should have been told “there you go” when they thought they were alone.

An end that is actually a beginning

Thirty-five years in the same place is not a habit, it is character. In a city full of stories, “At Teni’s” is the most frequently repeated: every morning from the beginning. When the successes are counted on the Municipal Day, when applause is distributed in the stadium, when whispers are heard in the hospital “it will be fine” – somewhere behind all that, that one is also smoldering embers from the grill. And that’s why, when it dawns early again tomorrow, you know where it will be turn on the light first.

Happy 35th birthday, Teni. Congratulations for yesterday, thanks for todayi see you tomorrow – as long as there are goods.

PS This text is personal. Teni and the author are children born to a brother and sister. Because of this, every sentence felt – before it was written.
