United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk arrived on Tuesday in the capital of Syria, Damascus, in the first visit to the country by the head of the world human rights organization.
Turk, an Austrian lawyer, will visit Syria and Lebanon from January 14 to 16 and meet with officials, civil society groups, diplomats and UN bodies, the UN said in a statement, without providing further details.
Syrian President Bashar al-Assad was ousted in a lightning offensive by rebels last month, ending 50 years of family rule and raising hopes of accountability for crimes committed during Syria’s more than 13-year civil war.
